So the objective I now have for my ONS is to start making sense of the information that I have - linking the branches so that I have a better view of the families.   This will then lead to a better picture of where the gaps are and so where I should look next.

Today I thought that the time had come to try and create a profile with the Guild of One Name Studies and start a website to load all the Caddie details. A website appears to be some undertaking - lots of fellow Guild members have mentioned TNG so I had a look and it needs PHP and MySQL.  It can also have multiple trees but didn't seem to think this would be facility needed by many - it is for my one name study, I have groups of people in various locations and no indication that they may join up anytime soon. Genes Reunited

Thanks to all of those who have replied to me via Genes Reunited.  I got around to doing a surname summary on Genes Reunited and saw that there were 399 matches for Caddie.  A quick look through and I could see that there was a lot of detail that I had been unaware of prior to this, in particular Caddies in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. I have sent a large number of emails to all those who had trees and a wonderful few got straight back to me with details or shared their trees.  The fantastic news is that a lot of the ones in New Zealand appear to link up and I have a whole family in South Africa. I find that the Hot Matches on Genes Reunited just give me 'matches' to someone with the same name but born half way round the world from my relative.  The surname search for One Namers has been so much more productive.

Continuing research

I have just been reading about a discussion on the Guild of One Name Studies regarding ownership of research. Having done a lot of hard work on your family tree or one name study what will become of it when you are no longer able to continue?  Do you have family / friends / colleagues who are ready and willing to take it on; if so you are probably one of the lucky few.  Perhaps you are planning on donating it to some form of library so that others can have access but this leads to further questions like do they want it, in the form it is currently in, does anyone know that you have arranged for it to go and who to contact.  What about email accounts and social media - does anyone know how to get access. A little bit of planning how might make everything a lot easier - if your chosen deposit needs everything index perhaps creating that index should go on your To Do list.  Perhaps those you have been in contact with could be asked to help so that there is a natural...
